Under the Artistic Direction of Gina Crusco, Underworld Productions Opera was created in 2004 to produce operas that are outside the box of mainstream repertoire, including premieres of new works, under-represented works of past centuries, and updated stagings. We de-mystify opera so that all may enjoy it by creating stylish, inclusive, and accessible performances with high musical and dramatic standards.
UP's Resident Artist program provides operatic training with outstanding professionals and performance opportunities, transforming singers into fully-fledged stage performers. "I am extremely impressed by the whole program!" - Suzanne Stone, soprano; 2010 RA.
Underworld Productions Opera has received grants from Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; NYC Department of Youth and Community Development; Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance; Better Neighborhood Fund; Medical Center Neighborhood Fund; Meet The Composer; The Venable Foundation; The Buckhorn Foundation; Puffin Foundation; and Joyce Dutka Arts Foundation.
